East Outlet

The Kennebec River begins at Moosehead Lake at East & West Outlets. The dam at East Outlet is the main source of the Kennebec with water releases of 500-8,000 cfs. The river is wadeable up to about 2,000 cfs but caution should be exercised at all release levels due to slippery rocks and deep drop offs. The river is rated class II & III at releases below 2,000 cfs and class III & IV over 2,000 cfs. PLEASE exercise caution since the water levels are subject to change at any time! For current water releases call: (800) 557-3569. The three and a half mile river from the dam to the red markers in Indian Pond is fly fishing only. Fishermen target the wild brook trout and the landlocked salmon both in abundance in the river if the temperatures and flow rates are right. There are several good pools between Route 15 and the dam. On the north side of the bridge is a road which allows access to the lower part of the river. The beach pool and other pools down stream are usually less busy than the dam pool.

Current regulations valid through March 31, 2010 allow fishing all year from the dam at Moosehead Lake to yellow posts at the tail of Beach Pool. Different regulations apply to the remainder of the river. Please check with the Chamber or one of the stores in town if you need help with East Outlet's fishing regulations. Many of our members provide guided drift boat trips on East Outlet from May through October. For more information: CLICK HERE
